Qualifications

Qualifications

Required skills and experience:

  • Proven skills to interpret and understand technical drawings including tolerances
  • Experience using hand tools.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to think critically and problem solve.

The Estimator (EST) holds a crucial role in creating accurate and specification-compliant quotations to fulfill all client requirements, while ensuring optimal efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Externally, the Estimator Interfaces with clients in a proactive and engaging manner, possessing a strong customer relationship and engagement mindset while applying technical knowledge in reading blueprints, customer specifications, commercial requirements and steel fabrication processes e.g. cutting, forming, welding to prepare costing and quotes that retain competitiveness and profitability objectives.

Internally, the Estimator collaborates closely with engineering, production, and purchasing teams to validate estimated costs, drive continuous improvement initiatives, and seamlessly transition secured projects to other team members for processing.

This position is instrumental in the achievement of strategic objectives through informed technical and commercial decision-making, proactive customer engagement, unwavering accountability, and prudent financial stewardship.

Job Duties

  • Prepare accurate quotations, ensuring strict adherence to specifications and deadlines, as well as contractual commitments
  • Verify and validate customer designs and requirements to ensure the feasibility of manufacturing and the accuracy of quotations
  • Proficiently set up and maintain the ERP system for both new and existing parts and products.
  • Thoroughly review customer requests, blueprints, and technical specifications to formulate detailed estimates and quotes.
  • Calculate material, labour, equipment, and overhead costs, and apply markups and discounts as warranted.
  • Ensure the accuracy, competitiveness, and alignment of quotes with customer commitments and expectations.
  • Effectively liaise with customers, sales, engineering, purchasing, and production teams to clarify requirements, resolve issues, and negotiate terms.
  • Proactively follow up with customers and sales teams to provide updates on the status of quotes and orders.
  • Diligently maintain records of quotes, orders, and changes in a comprehensive database.
  • Stay current with market trends, prices, and material and equipment availability to inform quoting decisions.
  • Identify and recommend opportunities for cost reduction, quality enhancement, and process optimization.
  • Actively participate in continuous improvement initiatives to minimize costs and enhance estimating efficiency.
  • Collaborate seamlessly with other departments (shop floor, production, purchasing, etc.) to solicit feedback and ensure the accuracy of quotations.
  • Thoughtfully review and respond to customer and supplier feedback, adding value while maintaining positive relationships and fostering resolution.
  • Ensure conformity to safety requirements as defined by Northside and/or Customers.
  • Perform any other duties as necessitated by the role.
Qualifications

Requirements

  • Diploma, degree, or relevant training/experience in Mechanical, Automotive, or Manufacturing field

  • 2+ years of industrial maintenance experience (manufacturing environment preferred)
  • Trade certification (Millwright, Industrial Mechanic, or Electrician) is a strong asset
